John, this is unexpected.

There’s no great way to say this, so I’ll just get right to it: We’re experiencing the worst fundraising slowdown since we started this race. The summer is a notoriously difficult time for campaign fundraising – but between us, I didn’t expect the summer slump to hit us quite this hard. 

This campaign can only succeed if we reach our fundraising goals, and we have quite a bit of catching up to do before midnight. That’s why I needed to reach out to you directly, John.
