I want to introduce you to this extraordinary man and tell you why I’m so excited to join forces with him in this movement.

Butch is an activist first. But he is also a dedicated educator, and – crucially in this moment – an honored historian whose work specializes in empire, colonialism, genocide and revolution.

For all of these reasons, Butch Ware is exactly the person we need in a Vice President right now.

Professor Ware is a leading academic authority on the U.S. Black Radical Tradition, Africa and Islam. He has served as a full faculty member at multiple prestigious universities, currently with UC Santa-Barbara, teaching in History, Black Studies, and Islamic Studies.

His critically acclaimed 2014 book, The Walking Qurʼan: Islamic Education, Embodied Knowledge, and History in West Africa, was hailed by historians and academics as a landmark study and a significant contribution to both Islamic and African studies.

Throughout his career, Butch has repeatedly put his scholarship into service for change movements here at home and abroad – notably in the wake of George Floyd’s murder in 2020, and again in response to the ongoing genocide in Gaza. He has organized teach-ins, developed community education materials, and equipped activists with the knowledge they need to effect change.

Most importantly, as a Black Muslim man in America, Butch has the personal lived experience confronting systemic injustice that brings a critical perspective as we confront ongoing genocides, unprecedented levels of wealth inequality, and an accelerating climate emergency with the global south on the front lines. 

It was that perspective that led to this exchange in a recent conversation between myself and Butch – and the moment I knew he would be an extraordinary running mate.

“Whether you vote red or whether you vote blue, militarized fascism wins. Right? That you’re essentially looking at a rivalry between two different factions of the 1% who have overlapping patronage networks.”

That statement strikes at the heart of every problem we seek to solve – that we do NOT have two major political parties in this country, but a single corporate-controlled uniparty with red and blue window dressing.

Neither Republicans nor Democrats stand for people, planet, or peace.

This campaign stands for a radically different vision for our country and our planet – one rooted in justice and human thriving. Professor Ware’s entire career as a scholar and an activist embodies this vision, and we need him in the White House with me.

Ours is the only campaign with a path to the White House that will end the genocide in Gaza and pursue an immediate arms embargo and permanent ceasefire with justice for Palestine. The only campaign confronting the climate emergency with the urgency it demands. And the only campaign with a radically transformative economic vision to build a society free of injustice, inequity, hunger, and want.
