You’ve probably heard about Donald Trump’s nasty, racist comments on Kamala.

At an event hosted by the National Association of Black Journalists (you can’t make up the irony), Donald Trump said: "I didn't know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black."

Thankfully there has been some good coverage in the mainstream media about why this attack is racist and unacceptable. I agree wholeheartedly.

I want to write to you about why this is happening and what we’re going to do about it.

This cycle, we have the luxury of understanding Trump and his playbook. It’s not rocket science. When he’s feeling good, he lies. When he’s feeling lousy, he lies and becomes unhinged.

The past few weeks have been pretty terrible for his campaign. Kamala has energized Democrats to record levels and is straight up beating him at the things he cares about (crowd sizes). So what does he do? He pulls out the racist attacks, not because he thinks they will work to change voters’ minds, but simply because he’s mad and he genuinely believes it. He’s losing his filter.

When Trump starts making racist comments, it’s vital we respond with one voice - it is wrong, it is a lie, and then we have to tell the truth. This isn’t about just one throw-away comment; this is about whether we want to let the leader of the country hold racist beliefs. I really think it’s that simple. What kind of country do we want to be?
