45 Years of Health and Hope
This month marks the 45th anniversary of Americares, a milestone that fills us with both gratitude and determination. Since our founding in 1979, we have been on the front lines of global health emergencies, bringing critical medicine, supplies and health care to those who need it most. From the early days of our first airlift to war-torn Cambodia to our ongoing responses to natural disasters, pandemics and humanitarian crises, Americares has stayed true to its mission: to save lives and improve health for people affected by poverty or disaster.
Over the past 45 years, our work has touched millions of lives in more than 164 countries. We've helped communities after hurricanes, provided lifesaving treatments during epidemics and supported health systems in conflict zones. Every life saved is a testament to the power of compassion and the impact we can achieve together.
As we reflect on this journey, we are also looking ahead – knowing that the challenges of global health continue to evolve. Whether by addressing the health impacts of climate change, supporting mental health services in disaster zones or expanding access to care in underserved communities, our commitment remains as strong as ever.

One Year After the Devastating Wildfires in Hawaii
Last summer's wildfires in Hawaii devastated communities, causing loss of life and displacing thousands of residents. Americares provided immediate support to health centers, including mobile medical units, delivering vital medicine, supplies and medical care to those affected.
Our team worked closely with local partners to support mental health services, ensuring that those affected received the emotional and psychological care they needed to heal. Americares will continue to help restore health services and support ongoing recovery efforts. Ten Years From the Ebola Outbreak in Liberia
In Liberia, the echoes of the devastating Ebola outbreak from 2014 to 2016 still resonate, especially for those who lived through it – like Damawah Saye, a midwife who bravely served on the front lines at Bomi County Hospital while pregnant. Despite the overwhelming fear and uncertainty, Saye did what was needed to protect herself and her unborn child. In December 2014, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, aptly named "Success" as a symbol of her victory over the deadly virus.
Today, as the Americares midwife educator and senior officer for reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health, Saye continues to impart the lessons she learned during those dark days. Her story is a powerful reminder of resilience in the face of unimaginable challenges, and her ongoing commitment to infection prevention underscores the importance of vigilance in public health.
