Republicans have been playing a long game while Democrats were busy focusing all of their attention on the top of the ticket. Their sneaky strategy? Flip state legislatures while we weren’t looking. And now, Republican controlled-states are wreaking havoc across the nation.

Republicans netted nearly 1,000 state legislative seats and governors offices during Barack Obama’s presidency, and by the time the Democratic Party woke up to what was happening, it was too late.

State legislative races are constantly overlooked and underfunded, but they hold real power — power over health care and tax policy, gun regulations, reproductive freedom, and even vital climate laws. But here's the kicker — the vast majority (70%) of voters can’t even name a single thing that their state legislators accomplished in their district. And Republican elected officials were counting on that ignorance to sneak their agenda through while nobody was paying attention.

In GOP-controlled states like Arizona, Texas, and Florida, they’ve passed outrageous anti-climate laws — banning public funds to combat the climate crisis, deleting any mention of climate change from state law, and even eliminating tax incentives for renewable energy companies and expanding fossil-fuel-fired power plants.

The GOP didn’t stop there; they’ve been packing the courts with conservative judges for years. These state courts have dismantled rights and protections at lightning speed — from stripping reproductive rights (remember: the case that overturned Roe started as a challenge to a Mississippi state law) to rolling back LGBTQ+ freedoms and making it harder for people to vote.

So, what’s JanePAC doing about it? We’re fighting back.

* In California, we’re going after oily politicians and incumbents who are too cozy with fossil fuel interests. Our strategy is already paying off — we scored big wins in the primary, putting climate champions on the ballot this November.

* In Arizona, we’ve endorsed 11 candidates with a historic chance to flip the state legislature with a pro-climate majority. The stakes couldn’t be higher — Arizona is already feeling the brunt of the climate crisis, and these races could decide the state’s future.

* And then there’s Michigan, where razor-thin majorities in both chambers make every race a nail-biter. We’ve endorsed climate champions who are ready to defend and expand Michigan’s progress on clean energy and environmental justice.

* But that’s not all. We’ve also endorsed climate champions in Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Texas — key states where the fight for our climate future is unfolding right now. And we’re just getting started.
