When I appeared on AZ PBS last week to talk about my campaign for Congress, one of the questions I was most glad to answer was on the subject of uranium mining in rural Arizona. Our tribal communities in rural Arizona have long suffered from the legacy of radioactive contamination, from a uranium mining industry unable or unwilling to properly clean up their messes and dispose of their toxic waste. There are over 500 abandoned uranium mines in our area, and we need enduring federal commitments to ensure the total cleanup of these toxic sites.
Despite the overwhelming evidence of the harmful health effects of uranium mining and nuclear testing in rural Arizona — including highly disproportionate cancer rates — my opponent thinks we need MORE uranium mining, not less. This is just another example of how out of touch Eli Crane is with the voters of this district, but I guess it shouldn’t be too surprising considering he doesn’t even live here.
