Every day we are being bombarded with news of how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting our communities. One thing you might have missed: The United States Postal Service could go bankrupt in a few short months due to losses in revenue, and Trump recently blocked an agreement to save it.

This is unacceptable. If we can bail out large corporations, we can absolutely prevent the Postal Service — the most popular government agency in America — from going bankrupt.

Now more than ever, the Postal Service acts as a lifeline for many people to receive medication, Social Security benefits, and stimulus checks. Come fall, many states will be looking to the USPS to assist voters with casting their ballots safely by mail.

Unlike private delivery companies, the Postal Service is required by law to deliver mail everywhere in America, including rural areas and low-income areas that are not profitable enough for many private companies to serve. Rural counties in our district, in particular, rey heavily on the USPS for last-mile delivery that private companies do not complete.

Without financial relief or intervention, the Postal Service will not be able to sustain itself for the long haul, and 630,000 workers — including over 100,000 veterans — will be out of a job. Purposefully sabotaging it at this moment is a betrayal of the people who have kept this country connected and who serve as frontline workers in this crisis day in, day out.

There's enormous energy right now to save the Postal Service. But if we're going to do it, we need to put the pressure on Congress and Trump to act before it’s too late.
