Friend,

With our county conventions coming to an end, this is a reminder of an important deadline. If you plan to run for Delegate to the August 2020 Democratic National Convention, you must file with the SCDP no later than 5 pm on April 30. No filing can be accepted after that time for any reason. Delegates will be elected at the State Democratic Convention, still scheduled for May 30.

To run for national Delegate, you must have voted in the Presidential Primary, attended your precinct meeting, and have been a delegate or alternate to your county convention, and you must be an elected delegate or alternate to the State Convention.

You may run for more than one category of Delegate.   If you wish to run for an At-Large Delegate position you must have signatures of 10 State Convention Delegates to accompany your filing form or you may pay a $50 filing fee. Due to COVID-19, we have created a Google form that will allow you to submit the names of 10 State Convention Delegates to satisfy the signature requirement. You can access the Google form by clicking this link.

Joe Biden will receive 39 Delegates and 4 Alternates from South Carolina. Bernie Sanders will receive 15 Delegates and 1 Alternate.

If you are a delegate or alternate to the SCDP Convention from your county, please keep May 30 on your calendar, but be alert for messages with new information. It is possible that we will not be able to meet in person or will have to adjust the date.

Besides the election of delegates, the SC Democratic Convention will vote to fill 3 slots on the Democratic National Committee. We have one slot for a male, currently held by Clay Middleton; one for a female, now held by Gilda Cobb Hunter of Orangeburg; and one slot, now held by Carol Fowler of Columbia, for a person of either gender. We are also represented on the DNC by our Chair, Trav Robertson, and First Vice Chair, Lessie Price, who were elected at our convention last year. Newly elected members will take office after the Democratic National Convention. To run for one of the slots on May 30, you must file by April 30. To receive a filing form please email [email protected].

We look forward to seeing you in person soon—meanwhile please stay safe and remember that Democratic candidates across the state are working hard and would love to have your help.
