First week of school at Vine Street Elementary
Dear friends and partners,
L.A. Unified started the year off with a bang this week (with no damage or injuries reported from the earthquake)! I was thrilled to be out at schools for a week filled with the promise of academic progress, social-emotional support, and joy for all our students. It was great to see new electric buses, outdoor classrooms in use, and some schools getting an early start on the cell phone ban going into effect next semester.
I’m incredibly grateful to our dedicated teachers, staff, and families for their hard work preparing everything for a smooth return to the classroom. And from the Board room, our work continues to ensure every child has the best possible learning environment—most recently with the Board’s vote to place a facilities bond on the November ballot.
Looking forward to an exciting year of learning and joy!
Onward,

In the Spotlight: Taft educator in the running for CA Teacher of the Year!
Mrs. Arby Jean Wolkov is an ASL teacher, World Languages Department Chair, and Class of 2025 Senior Steering Advisor at Taft High, and now has a new title to add—Teacher of the Year! Not only is Wolkov one of 24 educators across LAUSD to receive this honor, she is one of only five chosen to compete for the title statewide. Born and raised in LA after her parents immigrated from the Philippines, she received her BA in Deaf Studies and Masters in Special Education at CSUN, and started teaching in 2012 at her old high school. Wolkov and her husband have two dogs and love to travel—with a goal of visiting all seven continents!
