Not Your Average Farmers Market: Meth Found in the Celery

In a striking display of criminal ingenuity thwarted by law enforcement vigilance, over 2,300 pounds of methamphetamines were seized hidden within a shipment of celery at a Georgia farmers market. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced the major drug bust, which took place at the Atlanta State Farmers Market in Forest Park.

The operation unfolded after DEA agents were tipped off about a semitrailer that had crossed the Mexican border, laden with illicit drugs. The agents tracked the vehicle to the farmers market, where they discovered the methamphetamines ingeniously concealed within a cargo of celery.

DEA Special Agent in Charge Robert Murphy detailed the bust, stating, “This was contained in a cover load of celery,” and added, “It was hiding in the celery. Obviously, we threw away the celery. That didn’t make it to the store.”

The seizure marks one of the largest of its kind and highlights a growing trend among smugglers to use everyday produce to mask their drug trafficking activities. The operation led to the arrest of a Mexican citizen, though further details about the suspect and the charges have yet to be disclosed.
