Aug. 10 State of Emergency Declaration [ [link removed] ]
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine declared [ [link removed] ] a state of emergency for the following counties: Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Portage, Summit, and Trumbull following the tornadoes and strong storms that came through Northeast Ohio communities on Tuesday, August 6.
"This declaration of a state of emergency will give the state the ability to give these communities expedited assistance. At the moment, we have no outstanding requests for services the state can provide to our local communities to help in the aftermath of these storms," said Governor DeWine. "However, we are in this for the duration and will continue to help local communities in Northeast Ohio as they recover from the damage left by the storm, should we receive any new requests for services the state is able to provide."
In addition to the state declaration of emergency, Governor DeWine is directing Ohio Emergency Management Director Sima Merick to ask the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to come to Northeast Ohio and conduct a damage assessment.

Governor DeWine and Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Director LeeAnne Cornyn took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate [ [link removed] ] the grand opening of a comprehensive school-based health center on the campus of Springfield High School.
The Health Center at Springfield High [ [link removed] ], which opens just in time for the start of the 2024-2025 school year, will provide a range of services – including both primary care and mental health services – to support the needs of all 7,700 students in the Springfield City School District, as well as their parents and other members of the Springfield community.
“School-based health clinics have been proven to positively impact not only students’ health, but also their academic performance,” said Governor DeWine, who, in his most recent State of the State address [ [link removed] ], urged school districts across the state to add more school-based health clinics in their communities. “The new Health Center at Springfield High will help ensure students are physically, mentally, and emotionally at their best so they can thrive in the classroom and reach their full potential.”

Husted makes Broadband expansion announcement in Southwest Ohio [ [link removed] ]
Governor DeWine, Lt. Governor Husted and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik announced [ [link removed] ] a $50 million state investment in support of a broadband expansion project designed to improve internet coverage at approximately 38,000 addressable locations in Southwest Ohio — serving 13,000 households and more than 30,000 people who have no service today.
BroadbandOhio, a division of the Department of Development, is partnering with altafiber to provide high-speed, affordable internet in Adams, Brown, and Clermont counties as part of a Multi-County Last Mile Fiber Build Pilot program. Once completed, the project aims to provide high-speed broadband access to every unserved and underserved address in the tri-county region.
“My administration is committed to ensuring that all Ohioans, no matter where they live, have access to dependable, affordable high-speed internet,” said Governor DeWine. “In today's world, broadband access is an absolute necessity, and we're not going to leave our rural communities behind."
"We're opening up new economic, educational, and healthcare opportunities for thousands of people in Adams, Brown, and Clermont counties with this expansion," said Lt. Governor Husted. "There was no viable plan to expand internet access in these areas, so with this announcement we are opening up a world of opportunity that otherwise these counties would be left without.”

DeWine announces statewide campaign to encourage Ohioans to become volunteer firefighters [ [link removed] ]
Governor DeWine joined Ohio Department of Commerce Director Sherry Maxfield and State Fire Marshal Kevin Reardon at the Division of State Fire Marshal’s campus to announce [ [link removed] ] a statewide Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign to raise awareness of Ohio's need for volunteer firefighters.
“Many Ohio communities rely on volunteer firefighters to keep them and their families safe every day,” said Governor DeWine. “As volunteer numbers decrease, Ohioans are increasingly at risk, which is why it so important to spread awareness for Ohio’s need. We hope to encourage everyday Ohioans to become extraordinary heroes by serving their communities as volunteer firefighters.”
