LAPEER, MICH. The Michigan State Police (MSP) Grants and Community Services Division and Lapeer Post partnered with Special Olympics Michigan, Lapeer County Sheriff?s Office, Lapeer Police Department and the Lapeer County Intermediate School District (ISD) to implement a new day-long program called Sunny Day Camp that brings together police officers and students with disabilities for a day of fun and mentorship.?
?Sunny Day Camp is one more way our troopers are getting out and becoming involved in the communities they serve in authentic ways,? said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP.? ?Yesterday?s day-long event provided the perfect environment for our troopers to interact with students with disabilities in a fun and positive way. I know our troopers had as much fun as the students!?
Troopers and officers spent the day interacting with students, participating in activities that included inflatables, lunch, police displays, a dunk tank, first aid simulation activity/training, a Teaching, Educating, and Mentoring lesson called ?Get Ready Get Safe,? a dance party with shaved ice and a graduation ceremony.?
Sunny Day Camp is modeled after a similar program created by the Pennsylvania State Police.
The MSP plans to host additional events this year at other locations and plans to make Sunny Day Camp an annual program.
