John,
What a week for ballot initiatives! Abortion will now officially be on the ballot in Missouri and Arizona, and the abortion amendment in Nevada has been officially designated as Question 6 in the state.
Ballot initiatives are referendums that allow voters to weigh in directly on important issues, and they’ve been used in states like Kansas, Michigan, and Ohio to expand reproductive rights or prevent encroachment of them.
Now, more than a half-dozen states are set to vote on abortion rights outright this November.
But a right isn’t a right without access, and winning pro-choice ballot initiatives is only the first step in securing abortion rights in a state.
We must elect pro-choice state legislators and state Supreme Courts to ensure that pro-choice ballot measures are effectively implemented, and that patients gain access to the full spectrum of reproductive care.
That’s where we come in: Arizona, Nevada, and Florida are all priority states for us, because we know that we have opportunities for enormous impact.
When voters know that abortion rights are at stake, they show up. In all seven states that have had abortion questions on the ballot since Roe was overturned, there have been decisive pro-choice victories.
Abortion is a mobilizing issue, especially for young people, and these ballot measures will help drive turn-out in key states. Your support helps us get our Voter Guide into the hands of those voters, ensuring that when they go to the polls, they know about all the pro-choice candidates on their ballot.
So now it’s crunch time: with just 12 Tuesdays until Election Day, we’re excited about this momentum and moving full speed ahead. The opportunities are too great and the stakes are too high to slow down now.
With gratitude,
