John,
The carnage against civilians in Gaza has only continued as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to agree to a permanent ceasefire deal while carpet-bombing most of the territory.
Homes, schools, and places of worship where Palestinian refugees are gathering to survive are being targeted with bombs and missiles, killing innocent men, women, and children. Disturbing reports of torture by the Israeli military are rampant. At this point, at least 40,000 Palestinians have been killed, which is more than likely an undercount. Tens of thousands more have been injured, with millions displaced and facing starvation.
Despite the ongoing massacres against innocent people, many of whom are children and infants, the United States government has not stopped aiding and abetting the Israeli government’s violence: just this week, the U.S. agreed to give another $23.5 billion in military aid to Israel. This is unacceptable.
While our Justice Democrats in Congress have called for a permanent ceasefire and lasting peace since the beginning, more are joining them: nearly 60 Democratic members have now signed a letter demanding the White House halt all arms transfers to Israel. Even former Speaker Nancy Pelosi has signed on.
It further goes to show that opposing genocide is NOT a fringe position, John. And according to Zeteo, a new poll from YouGov/IMEU Policy Project found “over a third of voters in Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Georgia are more likely to vote for a Democratic nominee who pledges to withhold weapons to Israel.”
Ending this humanitarian crisis is not only the right thing to do — it’s what the people of this country want from their elected officials, and it can shape November’s critical election results in key swing states.
It’s beyond time for the Party and our new Democratic ticket to stand on the right side of history and come out strongly in support of a ceasefire and weapons embargo. Let’s make that clear to them in this crucial moment.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
