When young people ask me for advice, one of the first things I tell them is, “always have a book you’re reading.”

It might sound like simple advice, but any teacher will tell you: Books open up new worlds, lead us to new passions and knowledge, and help us to uncover a deeper empathy for our neighbors.

That’s why this week I was proud to sign into law a legislative package that will help a new generation discover those joys as well as the unlimited opportunities reading unlocks.

We’re ensuring that every pre-K and elementary educator, as well as other key staff members that students interact with and trust, receive high-quality professional development on best practices in literacy instruction.

Improving literacy rates among young readers is a major priority of my administration — and this week’s bill signing was a major step forward in those efforts.

These new laws aren’t all we’re doing to improve the quality of our students’ education. We’re providing new affordable childcare, expanding free lunches, and lowering the cost of higher education for many students around the state.

But the work is not done. Any New Jersey student lacking the ability to read is unacceptable, and the consequences carry on far beyond the classroom. So, will you commit to building on this progress with me as we continue to improve New Jersey’s education system? [[link removed]]
