John, did you know that 65% of Americans favor abolishing the Electoral College in favor of a popular vote system?
It’s true — and we couldn’t agree more. In recent decades, it’s become increasingly obvious that the Electoral College system no longer aligns with the democratic principles upon which our nation was founded. It no longer accurately reflects the will of the people — so it’s past time that we adopt a more equitable, representative, and accurate electoral process.
Are you part of that 65% of Americans in favor of abolishing the Electoral College and implementing a fairer system? If so, sign our petition now!
There are countless reasons why we’re calling for the abolition of the Electoral College, but here are some of the most compelling ones:
- It undermines the "One Person, One Vote" principle: The Electoral College can pick a President who didn’t win the popular vote — we’re all too familiar with this. Donald Trump and George W. Bush, in 2016 and 2000 respectively, won the presidency despite losing the popular vote. It’s long been clear that the Electoral College and the will of the American people are misaligned.
- It places disproportionate influence on swing states: Our current system allows swing states much more influence than solidly red or blue states, which marginalizes millions of voters.
- It discourages voter turnout and leads to public distrust in the government: In solidly red or blue states, many voters feel their votes won’t make a difference, which leads to lower turnout. We’re confident that a direct popular vote would encourage higher participation and enthusiasm. Voters would feel more confident knowing each vote is counted equally.
We’re calling on Congress to propose and pass a constitutional amendment to abolish the Electoral College.
Together, we can make this change!
Thank you,
Democratic Values
