We’ll get straight to it: The Assembly and Senate Appropriations Committees adjourned yesterday, and almost EVERY single climate justice bill we had our eyes on made it through.

That’s huge, team! We now have a clear picture of which bills we’ll be focused on getting our state legislators to pass over the next two weeks -- and ultimately send to the governor’s desk for signature.

Yesterday’s hearings send a powerful message: The California State Legislature is positioned to hold corporate polluters accountable and advance climate justice. But it’s going to take all of us to make it happen.

Several key climate bills are now on their way to the floor:

AB 1866: The Idle Oil Wells Clean Up Bill
AB 2716: Low-Producing Oil Well Accountability Act
AB 3233: The Local Environmental Choice and Safety Act
SB 615: Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling
SB 1221: The Neighborhood Decarbonization Act

These bills (and more!) will force corporate polluters to pay to clean up their toxic mess, protect fence-line communities, and advance clean energy solutions. Getting them through these key hearings is a testament to the power of this community and advocates like you. Thank you for stepping up and using your voice.

Just one bill we had been fighting for was killed in appropriations -- AB 593, which would have had a huge impact to decarbonize buildings and advance California’s path to carbon neutrality by 2045. It’s disappointing to see this bill end here -- but it’s also a critical reminder that we must continue to hold our elected officials accountable to the promises of California as a climate leader.

California has an outsized global responsibility to prove we can solve the climate crisis and end our reliance on the fossil fuel industry as it continues to harm our health and environment. And we can do it while centering justice and equity.

It’s imperative that we prioritize the health of our planet and the welfare of our communities over short-term gains, ensuring a sustainable and resilient future for generations to come.
