Volunteer Opportunity: Marie Park Tree Planting
Come to Marie Park, 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, to assist The Natural Resources Commission and City Staff with planting native trees at Marie Park. The event is part of a tree planting and educational demonstration project. Help to replace dead and dying ash trees, as well as restore and diversify the urban tree canopy in Mendota Heights. Meet in the parking lot next to the tennis courts to join in the fun!
*Volunteers should wear appropriate attire, including gardening gloves, closed-toe shoes, and dress for the weather. Please ensure anything you wear or bring with you has been cleaned to prevent the spread of invasive species. Shovels and other tools will be provided.

Coffee Tree
Tree of the Month: *Kentucky Coffee Tree *
The Kentucky Coffee tree is a native deciduous tree species in the Fabaceae family. It is a large overstory tree (60-75 feet). The Kentucky Coffee tree prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soil, but can also tolerate a wide range of soils as well as urban pollution. The Kentucky Coffee tree has doubly compound leaves which give it a tropical appearance, with arching branches similar to elm. It has large red-brown seed pods, however varieties such as ‘Espresso’ are pod-less.
The Kentucky Coffee tree’s native range includes the lower Midwest and most of the southeastern United States. It makes up less than .1% of the tree canopy in Mendota Heights. The Kentucky Coffee tree ‘Espresso’ is one of the choices available in the Mendota Heights Tree Canopy Program!
Fall Tree Canopy Planting
The *Mendota Heights Tree Canopy Program* provides a full-service purchasing and planting program to property owners within Mendota Heights at a subsidized rate to help grow the tree canopy in Mendota Heights, and to mitigate the loss of tree canopy due to Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).
Application deadline for fall planting is Oct. 4.

Your Input Needed: Parks Master Plan
The City of Mendota Heights recently completed the first phase of community engagement as part of the Mendota Heights System Master Plan. Concurrently, a team of City staff and consultants completed an audit of the Park System’s level of service, condition, programming, and financial sustainability.
Both the first phase of engagement as well as the audit identified potential park improvements, program diversification, and new amenities that would better support a high quality of life for the residents of Mendota Heights now and in the coming years. Over 90% of participants in the first phase of engagement supported expanding recreational opportunities in the Park System. The operating budget of the Park System cannot currently support the improvements.
In this second phase of engagement, we have two primary questions:
*1. **What of the requested improvements (if any) are a priority for the community?*
*2. **How will these improvements (if any) be funded?*
