Our research published last week revealed nearly 700 environmental permit breaches by water companies in 2023 - a three-year high - leading to more raw sewage polluting our rivers, lakes, and seas.

This is a national scandal. Water companies are violating permits almost daily while pocketing huge profits and bonuses.

We’re calling for a ban on executive bonuses for any company breaching their permits because profit must not come before the environment.

Our plan includes transforming water companies into public benefit companies, with profits reinvested into infrastructure, and replacing Ofwat with a new Clean Water Authority that has proper regulatory powers.

Countless families want to enjoy a swim this summer but are being deterred by fears of illness. A Liberal Democrat poll reveals that even eight in ten dog owners avoid letting their pets in the sea due to concerns about sewage.

Ending the sewage scandal is one of our top priorities in this Parliament. The Conservatives let it grow for years, but now, with the new Government announcing a Water Bill in the King’s Speech, we have a chance to push for real change.

We must ensure the Government enacts true reform across the system - it’s the only way to end this scandal once and for all.
