Meet the Oldham A-Team

This week we are celebrating the achievements of our young residents making the best start in life as A-Levels, T-levels and BTECs grades were awarded.

On Thursday morning Cllr Mohon Ali met students and staff at The Oldham Sixth Form College and Oldham College to offer our congratulations.

They included Oldham Sixth Form College student Mykhailo Tolstikhin, who arrived in the UK from Ukraine in 2022.

He is heading to Cambridge after receiving A* grades in physics, maths, further maths as well as a GCSE in English.

Mykhailo, 18, will be joined at Cambridge by his best friend Joshua Tindall from Dukinfield who achieved A* grades in maths, further maths, physics and electronics, and both will be studying civil engineering.

Laiba Javaid is off to Leeds University to study medicine.

She wants to become a doctor after achieving an A* in A-Level biology and two As in chemistry and maths.

In Oldham 98.3% of students achieved a pass at A-Level (A-E grade) which is 0.3% points higher than last year.

The national pass rate is 97.1%, which demonstrates Oldham has a higher than national average pass rate by 1.2 percentage points in line with pre-pandemic results.

At Oldham College, where students were celebrating T-level and BTEC successes, Principal and Chief Executive Simon Jordan said: “Collectively with the sixth form we have 6,000 students. If we can get them to achieve it can only be good for Oldham.”
