WG Economy: Inflation Below 3% For The First Time

The morning's new CPI report showed inflation finally going below 3% (2.9%) for the first time since March 2021 - the same month that the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan was passed. This means it has taken almost 3 1/2 years for the country to get back to about the same point of inflation.


While the Biden-Harris administration has tried to blame other factors like price gouging as the cause of inflation, voters believe that the spending policies of this administration have made inflation worse. From our latest survey for Winning the Issues (July 23-25), voters believe government policies under President Biden and Democrats in Congress have caused inflation to increase and prices to go up (53-36 believe - not believe; 52-33 among independents).

The entry of Kamala Harris into the presidential campaign has shaken up the race, and polls show the margins have gotten tighter. Only a few weeks ago, many Republicans were anticipating a landslide, but now the race looks closer than ever. The latest Real Clear Politics average shows Harris has overtaken Trump by half a point (0.5%).

Although Democrats have a new candidate, the fundamentals of the race are generally the same. Even when Biden was still in the race and Trump was ahead, this was always a close race. Additionally, the unfavorable of both frontrunners meant that the race was volatile with late deciding especially among independents. The volatile nature of the political environment meant there was always the possibility that the race could turn on a dime. It is also true that Harris has high unfavorables (46-50 favorable-unfavorable from our July 23-25 survey for Winning the Issues), although her unfavorables are lower than Trump's (42-57), and the race could easily tilt back the other way.
