I wanted to take a moment to talk about something that’s been weighing on me lately — our kids’ mental health.
You'd be surprised how often parents pull me aside at events to share a story about their kid who is struggling. It's heartbreaking, and it definitely wasn't this bad when I was growing up.
The numbers are scary — nearly 60% of US teen girls felt persistently sad or hopeless. Anxiety and depression rates among California’s kids have shot up by 70%.
As adults, we often talk about how current events and the stresses of life affect us, but we can't leave out how much our kids are impacted too. The pandemic turned their worlds upside down, online bullying is worse than ever, and social media isn’t helping.
I strongly believe we have to take this issue seriously and do something about it.
That’s why I introduced the Improving Mental Health in Schools Act. It will bring more mental health professionals into our schools to make sure our kids get the support they need.
We have to tackle this issue head-on. There is zero reason to wait and I refuse to let politics get in the way. Let’s get this bill passed and get our kids more support in school.
