Last week we were in New York — Congress was out of session — and I
figured I’d take you along for one ‘morning in the life’ of a Member of
Congress when we aren’t voting in Washington:

My first stop of the day was at about 6:30 AM. I went to CBS Morning News,
where we talked about Vice President Harris’ running mate pick and trying
to educate people about what’s going on.

After getting us to the studio, a producer escorted us to a green room —
where guests throughout the day can put down their things and grab a quick
coffee — before going to Hair & Makeup.

When I tell you these women are professional… I mean they are PROS! These
folks know exactly how to make a face they just met look great under
lights. I’m always learning from them. I find that most H/MU artists use a
huge range of products, from high-end to drugstore, and you can look
amazing in everything from budget to expensive products. It’s all about
technique.

We headed to set. Anchors huddled with producers during breaks to get
latest updates, and prepare for the next segment, while I got in the zone
for the round-table interview.

After wrapping the morning press hit, I headed to a diner with my campaign
manager to chat over a few things before he heads to DC. We started
chatting when a call from the White House comes through on my phone ☎️

In terms of how this goes down, sometimes the White House does just call
out of the blue. Sometimes it’s a staffer, an advisor, or even the
President.

No, it does not get old. I still think “Holy 💩” to myself every time it
happens. I still think, “What’s going on? I was waiting tables six years
ago.” I have a half-eaten omelette in front of me, and clinking plates all
around that I’m hoping doesn’t pick up too loudly over the phone. (I think
it’s fine.)

They are returning a call of mine. While the major news is rightfully on
the huge change at the top of the ticket, a dynamic in the background is
that President Biden intends to govern hard over the next six months.

I, like many others, have been speaking up for working families to see
what real progress we can make in the next 3, 6, or 12 months and beyond.

Some primary areas have been: housing, healthcare, Supreme Court reform,
ceasefire, and immigration. I have more specific goals under these areas
that you often need to move chess pieces around for several months to
clear a lane.

This is the part of politics that people don't see as much — it’s slower
and boring — but to me it’s been pretty exciting to see things take steps
to come to fruition.

After the call, I headed to our congressional office in The Bronx to catch
up with our team and knock out some work at my desk (which I can’t share
here), but our campaign team has been out and about in the community —
I’ll be sure to share some of that later.
