Vulnerable Birds Losing Ground; bird Illustrations
Earlier today, we launched our August campaign with a big goal: Inspire bird lovers like you to make an annual gift while your first gift will be matched to go twice as far to protect birds and their habitats from extreme weather events like the wildfires ravaging pristine wilderness around the world. As the climate crisis worsens, these weather events will only become more common and deadly for birds and people alike.

During nesting seasons, wildfires often force parent birds to make heart-wrenching choices: Remain in perilous conditions to care for their young or abandon their nests to seek safer grounds—a decision filled with additional dangers. This dilemma is a contributing factor to significant population declines for certain birds.

Western Burrowing Owls are one unique species being forced to make tough decisions due to the threat of wildfire. Their population is already struggling as modern agricultural practices have removed the prairie dogs and ground squirrels they depend on to provide nesting burrows. And as their sagebrush steppe habitat disappears as a result of wildfires each year, an estimated 15+ million acres were lost between 2000 and 2018, these extraordinary owls are forced to seek shelter and sustenance in airports, golf courses, and vacant lots.

In this code-red crisis, you are the best hope birds have. Please start your annual gift now while your first gift will be matched up to $50,000 to provide a brighter future for the birds we love.

As wildfires continue to grow in size and intensity as a result of climate change, habitats don't have time to regenerate before burning again, leading to the destruction of open spaces, shrubs, and century-old trees. However, these devastating fires are not inevitable. Together with bird lovers like you, we’re maintaining and protecting resilient landscapes nationwide, pushing for the large-scale change it will take to ease habitat loss and help reverse the climate crisis.

Right now, we’re supporting a number of bills in Congress to reauthorize existing programs or create new programs to restore habitat, protect wildlife, and build community resilience in places like the Great Lakes, the Connecticut River, the Everglades and South Florida, the Delaware River basin, the Mississippi River, and across the imperiled sagebrush ecosystem.
