Hi,
Your voice can make a difference in the fight against plastics, for
the lives of our families.
Two weeks after EARTHDAY.ORG released Pets
vs. Plastics, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), announced it
was ending the 17-year relationship with the Association of American
Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), which had been setting standards for
pet food ingredients in the United States.
What were those standards? This arrangement made it possible for
ingredients such as plastic packaging in restaurant waste, plastic
identity ear tags left on carcass heads, dust, chaff, and even pig,
cattle, and chicken feces to potentially make their way into our pets’
food.
A startling fact we discovered and need to share: Although
euthanized pets are NOT an approved ingredient on any pet food list,
there is evidence that the bodies of euthanized dogs and cats do get
into pet food. In 2018,
Steven Solomon, D.V.M., then in his second year as director of the
Center for Veterinary Medicine in the FDA was reported in the Pet
Food Industry website as being “startled” by the discovery of the
euthanizer drug pentobarbital
in some pet foods. The most likely source is euthanized animals.
We can’t let these agencies neglect protecting our families. The FDA is letting the public weigh in on how
pet food should be regulated. Find out more and add your voice before
September 9th.
Our campaign page details two options to submit your comments. We
provide the text of a letter you can copy and paste into the linked
FDA’s comment box, or print it out and snail mail to the address
provided. The deadline for comments is September 9th and we
need to build momentum, so please speak up now and share this action
with your friends.
We need to protect our families, and let the FDA know that pets
come before the profits of the pet industry. Please
make your voice heard.
Together,
Kathleen Rogers President
