A weekly note from from Mayor Brian Turnbull...
** DEAR NORTHVILLIANS,
------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
I write to you this week on behalf of your Northville TEAM, including myself, Pat Sullivan (your City Mgr.) and your City Council of Marilyn Price (Mayor Pro Tem), Barbara Moroski-Browne, Pat Giesa, and Sam Ekong.
Everyone’s goal at the City is to keep our community of Northville as safe as possible.
I know I do this often, but I can’t say it enough – thank you to each & every one of you for being #NorthvilleStrong through this COVID-19 situation and for all you’ve done to assist those in need in this community. It’s truly my privilege & honor to represent you as your Mayor.
Communication continues to be a top priority for me to keep you connected!
At the Federal, State & especially at our local Northville level, we will re-engage in-person when it’s safe ... but until then, we will continue to communicate virtually.

Earlier this month, I conducted a virtual Town Hall Q&A meeting for all Northvillians (view the transcript) ([link removed]) and also participated in a Northville Chamber podcast
([link removed]) geared toward our business sector. Because of your overwhelming input and requests, an additional Q&A virtual Town Hall will take place this Thursday, April 30, at 7PM.

COVID-19
As we all know by now, on March 10, 2020 (when our “emergency status” started), Michigan identified its first two cases of COVID-19 (today, Michigan has close to 40K infected and 4K deaths, while the Nation is close to 1 Million infected and 60K deaths). As the virus has spread across Michigan, it has caused untold disruption to our health, our economy, our home lives, education, civic activities, our businesses, and impacted our social and religious institutions. I truly thank you for sharing your time & talents with others in helping us all get through these extraordinary times … Together.
Since the “Stay Home/Stay Safe” edict officially started 3/23, I sincerely appreciate all you are doing for those in our community. Some notable changes to this directive were approved just this past week (for Michigan): Boating, Golfing, 2nd home travel, lawn care, bicycle maintenance & previously for builders to conduct minimum basic operations (roughing in structures) & other activities (with social distancing).
Our worlds have certainly evolved, haven’t they? As I walk & drive our town daily, I‘m encouraged to see citizens wearing masks, scarfs & bandanas (CDC guidelines) and adhering to social distancing … We all appreciate that! The executive order this week states, “Individuals must wear a covering over their nose and mouth when in any enclosed public space” (while maintaining 6 ft. social distancing). This order along with other State policies & procedures will continue to 5/15. But know prior to their expiration, these rules will be evaluated & maintained, intensified or relaxed, as more data becomes available.
It’s been an extraordinary time as the world moves toward the future in a different way. Going forward, I believe we will look at life differently, as it relates to our work environment, socialization, gatherings & personal spacing. As you know, I don't have all the answers. Truth is, no one does, but my commitment to you is to continue to be transparent while keeping all Northvillians connected & safe.
ACTIONS
* I continue to urge people to stay home (except for essential trips and occasional walks for mental & physical well-being). Importantly though, stay close digitally through your phone, facetime, emails, and/or text messages with those you know & love in the community.
* Your diligence and actions are evident again in the data this past week – we (together) have flattened the curve of infection locally. Daily, I analyze all data points from the State & County, and they suggest that the Northville community reached our peak weeks ago. Hospitalizations are peaking now.
* Congress’s $2.2 Trillion support package for Covid-19 included the (CARES) Act, designed to aid our small businesses and gives us resources from FEMA, the National Guard & the Army Corp. of Engineers. An additional stimulus bill passed last week, and I’m enthused that yet another one could be in front of Congress soon.
* Many citizens & businesses have continued to share with me that they received their stimulus checks. Also, local small business grants & loan programs have continued to be bolstered by the Federal government, the State, and our local counties. I continue to be involved in the COVID-19 task forces representing the community.
* The TCF Center (Cobo) and the Suburban Connection Showplace in Novi are Covid-19 Medical centers now.
* Additionally, I thank you for your support of our local Northville Civic Concern activity. They are doing great work … our local Civic Concern continues to serve hundreds in our community.
* Northville school officials & teachers continue to instruct via a distant-learning curriculum. Also, ([link removed]) the Schools continue to post closures of their playgrounds, athletic fields & tracks for your safety.
DON’T FORGET TO COMPLETE THE 2020 CENSUS …
As I mentioned last week…In times of crisis, it’s easy to let some priorities slip your mind. But this one is important! The 2020 Census is well underway as households across our community are completing their census forms. In Northville, we have improved to 70.9% completion vs Southeast Michigan at 63.1% and Wayne County at 55.1% (as of April 27, 2020). You can respond online, by phone, or by mail. To learn more, you can visit their website ([link removed]) .
What is at stake?
* Funding for roads, bridges, and other infrastructure; Hospitals, emergency response, and data used to support other funding mechanisms.
* The census is used to allocate funding for education in communities, including special education, classroom technology, teacher training, after-school programs, and school lunch assistance.
* In the event of natural disasters (COVID-19), The U.S. Census Bureau produces timely local data that are critical to emergency planning, preparedness, and recovery.
* The count also determines the number of Congressional representatives for each state.
If you have completed the 2020 Census, thank you!
So, in Conclusion, with the COVID-19 Situation …
Regarding Northville City Operations:
* Senior Transportation services have continued & Essential Businesses remain open.
* Service by First Responders has continued without interruption. We’ll continue to coordinate efforts & best practices with surrounding communities – we’re working well with our Northville Township partners. I’d like to thank our local Health Care Workers for all they are doing, too.
* I encourage you to support your local businesses in Northville – the survival of many of your favorite businesses is dependent on our patronage now. The strength of the community is our walkability downtown ... your City Center is truly the downtown section for not only Northville, but Northville Township, Novi, and a great deal of Livonia. Let’s support it at this time of need!
* Remember to reach out & check-in with our seniors, family members, friends & others who are part of your lives.
Share your Time & Talents with those around you as we work through this situation… TOGETHER!
Be Safe ... And continue to stay #NorthvilleStrong!
Brian Turnbull
