Dear John,
Lately I’ve had this strange new feeling that I couldn’t quite place.
Then it hit me. For the first time in who knows how long, I’m feeling hope about the near-term future of our democracy.
Think of it. Just over three weeks ago, Joe Biden was still the presumptive Democratic nominee for president. Donald Trump was leading in nearly every battleground state poll.
Three weeks later, the world has been turned upside down, and we have a real shot at finally, once and for all, moving America past the anger and darkness of Donald Trump.
Now, here’s where I provide the reality check. As good as things seem right now, this is still a very, very close election. National polls remain well within the margin of error, and Republicans have such a huge advantage in the Electoral College that they could lose the nationwide popular vote by three to four points and still win the White House.
Inequality Media Civic Action is running our largest election education campaign ever, and I’m seeing clear statistical evidence that our campaign is making a difference with voters. Now we need to go even bigger.
That’s why I’m asking you today: Will you donate $5 to help Inequality Media Civic Action educate the public and defeat Donald Trump?
Now I want to be clear: I would not ask you to donate your hard-earned money to Inequality Media Civic Action unless I really believed that our work is making a clear, concrete impact on helping defeat Donald Trump.
So let me explain what we’re doing:
1. Warning America about Project 2025: Project 2025 is the terrifying step-by-step authoritarian playbook for Donald Trump’s second term. Just a few months ago, most Americans had never heard of it. But since we launched our public education effort to sound the alarm across every social media platform, it’s broken through and become a major liability for the Trump campaign. Now we need to keep pushing to make sure every last voter knows about it.
2. Closing the TikTok gap: TikTok is the #1 most popular social media app for millions of young people — i.e., the voters who will determine the outcome of this election — and Donald Trump has 10 million followers, compared to just 3.6 million for Kamala Harris. That’s a big gap, but two months ago, Trump had 17 times as many followers as the Biden-Harris campaign account. Inequality Media Civic Action is one of the few progressive organizations with enough engagement on TikTok to help chip away at Trump’s advantage.
3. Combating Trump amnesia: Millions of Americans seem to have come down with a severe case of amnesia about what the Trump years were really like. In fact, recent polling shows that nearly 50% of voters say that the country was better off when Trump left office in 2021 than when he came in, a huge jump from what people thought at the time. We’re reminding people how awful the Trump years were with our proven-effective video series “10 things you might have forgotten about the Trump years.”
Friends, I’m so excited about the Harris-Walz ticket. They’re bringing the joy back, and it’s just so wonderful. But they can’t do it alone; we must all do what we can to support them.
Will you donate $5 to help Inequality Media Civic Action spread the truth, educate as many people as possible, and defeat Donald Trump?
Thank you for joining with us,
Robert Reich
