When our elected officials lose the trust of their constituents, we vote
them out. But what about Supreme Court justices?

Multiple investigations have found that Justice Clarence Thomas has failed
to reveal a seemingly endless list of perks and payoffs, including, most
recently, a flight from Hawaii to New Zealand with a wealthy conservative
donor.(1) Justice Samuel Alito has flown multiple flags showing his deep
affinity for Trump and the January 6th protestors and yet refused to
recuse himself from cases involving the former president.(2)

Both justices have shown a lack of integrity, judgment, and sheer common
sense, making them unfit for their positions. The bad news is that the
only way to remove them from office is through impeachment proceedings.
The good news is that Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently
filed articles of impeachment against the two justices.

The decisions of the Supreme Court have a massive impact on Californians.
When the court overturned the Roe decision, California became one of a
handful of safe harbor states for people in surrounding areas seeking
abortion access.(3) When the Court ruled that people experiencing
homelessness do not have a right to sleep outside, California’s leaders
moved to fine, ticket, and evict people with nowhere else to go.(4) And
the Court’s countless pro-business, anti-people decisions have forced
California to do more and more to make up for cutbacks in federal support
and bureaucracy.(5)

Supreme Court justices must be able to maintain an impartial approach,
adjudicating the law and not their own personal preferences or benefactor
interests. Both Justices Alito and Thomas have repeatedly shown that they
are indeed beholden to special interests or their own biased beliefs and
thus are no longer fit to serve on the Court.

By introducing the Articles of Impeachment, Representative Ocasio-Cortez
laid the groundwork for removing these corrupt justices from the Court.
But, now it’s up to the rest of the House to move the hearings forward.
