Hi John,

This week, the historic ballot measure to ban factory farming in Berkeley, California was officially named Measure DD. It will appear on the November 5th ballot. *If passed,* *Measure DD* ( [link removed] ) *will make Berkeley the first city to prohibit Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency.* These large-scale, industrial facilities harm animals, the environment, workers, and public health.

Thankfully, there are currently no factory farms in Berkeley, but that wasn’t true a few months ago. There was a large CAFO in Berkeley called Golden Gate Fields that housed over 1,000 horses who spent most of their time trapped in tiny stalls, except of course, for dangerous races and minimal exercise. I organized dozens and dozens of protests at the Golden Gate Fields racetrack over the years, adding a new tombstone every time another horse was killed there.

Fortunately, Golden Gate Fields finally closed ( [link removed] ) this past June, following years of protests. Measure DD will ensure another CAFO doesn’t replace Golden Gate Fields. The measure will also set an example for other cities, counties, and the state of California to follow!

Berkeley has helped lead the way on social justice issues, including free speech, disability rights, and animal rights, too. Berkeley was the second city in the country to ban the sale of animal fur, after West Hollywood, which helped pave the way for the entire state of California to ban fur sales and fur farming. Now, Berkeley voters have the chance to lead the way towards a factory farm-free future.

This historic ballot measure has already received international press coverage ( [link removed] ) -- and we hope to generate even more attention. *Please help us spread the word on social media and build a movement to end factory farming everywhere. Share the news on* *Instagram* ( [link removed] ) *and* *Twitter* ( [link removed] ) *.*

Thank you,
Paul
