Calling Special Session to Build on Success of Bipartisan Property Tax Relief for Coloradans and Prevent Risky Ballot Measures From Devastating Funding for Colorado Schools
Today, I am calling on the Colorado General Assembly to reconvene for a special session to provide Coloradans with property tax relief now, preventing harmful ballot measures and protecting Colorado’s economy.

This special session will focus on property tax relief legislation to reduce Coloradans’ property tax burden starting in 2025 and will begin at 10:00 AM on August 26th, 2024. We can avoid the risky and devastating impacts of Prop. 108 and Initiative 50, which would jeopardize funding for critical services in our state like education, as well as municipal bonds and borrowers’ ability to fund important projects like housing and schools.
I have signed a number of bills into law to reduce property taxes:

2022
SB22-238, passed with bi-partisan support, reduced the residential property assessment valuation for 2023 and 2024 from 7.15% to 6.765% of actual value and 29% to 27.9% of actual value for nonresidential property.

2023
During the 2023 special session, the General Assembly passed bipartisan legislation to further reduce residential property tax rates to 6.7% of actual value and increased the amount that is exempt from taxation from $15,000 to $55,000.

SB23B-001

2024
Earlier this year, I signed the bipartisan SB24-233, which reduced property taxes by $1.3B for 2024 and 2025, providing an average of $500 in relief for Colorado families, while prioritizing school funding revenue.

The cost of inaction is too high. We refuse to gamble with our schools, our economy, our future. Proposed ballot measures threaten to gut funding for K-12 and higher education, and Coloradans are counting on us to find a path forward that saves people money on property taxes while preserving these critical institutions.

Update on DonorsChoose Funding
Early last week, I announced $2.7 million in funding to help Colorado educators purchase resources for their classrooms that will help Colorado students succeed.

The window for submissions closed on August 8, with more than 9,000 projects submitted in the first 24 hours following the announcement. Colorado expects to fund more than 5,000 projects immediately from teachers across Colorado. DonorsChoose expects that many of the remaining projects will be funded through their national network of individual donors and corporate partners.

Visiting Chaffee and Pueblo Counties:
Launching New Housing Opportunities, Discussing Colorado’s Wildfire Mitigation Efforts, and Joining Ribbon Cutting for Latino Chamber of Commerce of Pueblo

On August 9, I joined the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) and local leaders to announce new workforce housing units in Buena Vista, a major housing initiative that will support local workforce sustainability now and into the future. By providing local housing options for employees, DOC reduces the need for long commutes from surrounding areas, contributes to more connected communities, and helps make the state of Colorado an employer of choice.

Next, I visited

the Midland Apartments in Buena Vista , a partner of the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, which will provide 60 units of low-cost housing. The complex is expected to open in 2025 and will include an early childcare center.

I also visited Colorado Firecamp, a recipient of the

Colorado Strategic Wildfire Action Program (COSWAP) grant. Colorado Firecamp trains wildland firefighters and forest management crews to help strengthen Colorado’s wildfire response and mitigation efforts.

Finally, I joined the ribbon cutting for the 45th anniversary of the Latino Chamber of Commerce of Pueblo, an important driver of Pueblo’s, and Colorado’s, economy.
