Across Oregon, We're Breaking Ground on a New Generation of Salmon Restoration Projects

This summer, Wild Salmon Center is getting deep in the weeds (we're talking about you, reed canary grass!) in the Coquille, Coos, Siuslaw, and Siletz basins. Thanks to state and federal restoration funding, the WSC-led Coast Coho Partnership is scaling and speeding its coho recovery work. With landowners, Tribal technicians, and partners like the Siuslaw Soil and Water Conservation District—lead on a project to reconnect the Siuslaw with sweet floodplain habitat just beyond Highway 126—we're advancing science-based plans to bring key Oregon salmon rivers back to health.

Alaska Starts Work on a Salmon-Threatening Industrial Road. Alaskans are Fighting Back.

In August, Alaska's Department of Transportation launched phase one of the salmon-threatening West Susitna Industrial Access Road. Alaskans are fighting back. At events like Salmonfest, the Defend the West Su coalition is sharing the news: a so-called “recreation” road project is just DOT's sneaky way to break ground on its 100-mile industrial road. Until Aug 23, Alaskans can tell DOT to stop this road project. Let's keep the West Su wild—along with its abundant fish and wildlife, hunting and recreation opportunities, and thriving tourism economy.

Honoring Jim Lichatowich, "Gentleman" of the Salmon Wars

This spring, we lost a visionary scientist and wild fish advocate—one whose words forced the world to face hard truths about wild salmon. Jim Lichatowich was a veteran biologist with the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife. His books, including Salmon Without Rivers (1999) and Salmon, People, and Place (2013) are canonical in our world. “It’s hard to overstate Jim’s influence on the work that we do," says Wild Salmon Center President & CEO Guido Rahr. With a posthumously-published book due out this fall, Lichatowich's legacy starts a new chapter.
