A MESSAGE FROM ACTING ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL
BRENT J. COHEN

This week, I had the privilege of meeting [ [link removed] ] with state and territorial criminal justice planning agencies, as well as nationwide leaders in the field of community violence intervention, to discuss shared priorities and our collective goals for advancing community safety and equal justice.

The two events—the National Criminal Justice Association's 50th annual forum and a roundtable meeting with the second cohort of the University of Chicago Crime Lab's Community Violence Intervention Leadership Academy—highlighted the range of OJP's partnerships in building and strengthening the public safety infrastructure of America.

The state administering agencies I spoke to at the NCJA forum play a vital role in helping us address community safety needs, particularly through their management of formula grant programs administered by OJP. These include the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program and the Victims of Crime Act victim assistance and compensation programs. Meanwhile, the CVI professionals I met with at the roundtable represent a growing field of dedicated leaders working to interrupt gun violence and break the cycles of trauma and harm in our country.

I am grateful for the critical work they are doing, and I look forward to continuing to explore ways we can work together and innovate to meet the safety and justice challenges of our time.
