Immigrant youth fought like hell to win DACA — a life-saving program that has opened doors to opportunities and offers temporary protection from deportation for some undocumented people.
And 12 years ago today, applications for DACA opened up, and thousands of people lined up in cities across the country to learn about their new rights and protections. The hope present in the streets was unlike anything before.
Since that day, hundreds of thousands of immigrant youth have applied for and received DACA protections, which allowed them to go to school, work, and start families free from the threat of deportation.
The DACA program was a historic victory for immigrant youth who advocated tirelessly for this program.
But since then, anti-immigrant Republicans have fought the program tooth-and-nail with every tool in their toolbox. They are still spending big on court cases to strike down the program completely, even after Judge Hanen shut down the program to new applicants three years ago.
In the 12 years since DACA has passed, UWDA has stood strong in the face of right-wing, white supremacist attacks on this key program. When Trump came for DACA, we fought back with the same tenacity that it took for immigrant youth and our allies to win DACA just over a decade ago.
Looking back on the last 12 years of DACA, it remains a powerful reminder that we can create real change. That when immigrant youth fight, we win. And that we can protect our hard-fought progress. 🧡
