I want to share a story about why it’s important we have moms of young
kids representing us in Congress.
When we expanded the Child Tax Credit during the pandemic, there were
stricter income limits on single parent households than on married
households. I call it the Single Parent Penalty.
From a policy perspective, this penalty makes no sense! There’s no “single
parent discount” for groceries, kids’ shoes, rent, or childcare. By
punishing single parent families, we punish the children whose families
are often most in need of assistance.
I asked Congressional staffers and my colleagues why we have the Single
Parent Penalty in the first place. They told me, “No one’s asked about it
before.”
That might be because no single mom of young kids had ever been elected to
Congress—until I won in 2018.
When we elect people to the halls of power who share our experiences, they
make policies that work better for all Americans.
Truth to Power endorses candidates who will fight for what families need,
not what corporate special interests want. And, we’ve partnered with Vote
Mama, an organization that supports moms of young kids running for office.
Together, we’re working to elect people like Raquel Terán in Arizona, a
mom and community advocate, to be a voice for families in Congress.
We need more people in Washington who are willing to ask tough questions,
challenge the status quo, and directly confront the biggest challenges
families are facing.

Mama to help us elect more leaders with diverse experiences that reflect
the American people?
Thank you,
