Hurricane Debby Made Land Fall

Last week, Hurricane Debby made landfall twice in South Carolina. It brought flooding, strong winds, and even a couple tornados in the Lowcountry. We want you to know that our office is working closely with numerous departments and local leaders to ensure residents are safe and have shelter while damage assessments are on going. We got off a call with FEMA and they’ve updated us on the disaster response throughout Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. If you need assistance, please contact our office at Mace.House.Gov/Contact.

Our Work In the Lowcountry

Our Office Teamed Up With Meals On Wheels:

Last week, in the middle of Tropical Storm Debby, we joined Meals On Wheels volunteers to deliver meals in the Lowcountry. A meal and a friendly face can turn someone's entire day around. Despite the wind and rain, @ECMealsOnWheels was committed to ensuring that no one in our community went hungry. We witnessed firsthand how a warm meal and a friendly face can truly brighten someone's day, especially during difficult times.

Cat experiments stopped at US Department of Veterans Affairs:

In a historic move, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has decided to halt all scheduled experiments involving cats, marking the end of such testing at the VA. This decision follows our office’s relentless advocacy and efforts alongside the White Coat Waste Project. The experiments, which included implanting medical devices in cats, will no longer proceed. This milestone represents a major victory in our continued efforts to promote animal welfare and ensure responsible use of taxpayer dollars. You can read our statement here.

Our Office was awarded the Hero of Main Street Award

Our office has been recognized as a 2024 "Hero of Main Street" by the National Retail Federation for our efforts in supporting the retail sector and small businesses in the Lowcountry. Excessive regulation and red tape have stifled small businesses, and with our state's retail industry contributing $69.2 billion to the U.S. GDP, it is essential to create an environment where job creators can succeed. Our office remains committed to advocating for policies that support and empower local businesses. You can read our press release here or by clicking the photo above.

Our National Debt Passes $35 TRILLION & Three Year High Unemployment:

Recent economic data paints a troubling picture for our nation. The July jobs report revealed unemployment rising to 4.3% - a three-year high and the fourth consecutive monthly increase. Simultaneously, many of you have shared your struggles with the rising cost of living, as inflation continues to outpace wage growth. Most alarmingly, our national debt has surpassed $35 trillion - over $104,000 for every American. These indicators clearly show that current policies are failing hardworking Americans, leading to job insecurity, decreased purchasing power, and an unsustainable debt burden on future generations. Our office is championing responsible spending, tax policies that let you keep more of your hard-earned money, and initiatives to create real, sustainable economic growth.

We Introduced a Bill To Modernize the VA with Blockchain Technology

On Tuesday, July 30th, we introduced a new bill called the "Veterans Affairs Distributed Ledger Innovation Act of 2024,” and here’s why: The Department of Veterans Affairs has been struggling with outdated systems, some dating back to the 1990s. These old systems are not just slow and inefficient; they also put our veterans' personal and medical information at risk of cyber attacks. Our bill aims to change this by directing the VA to study the potential of blockchain technology, also known as distributed ledger technology. Cody Carbone, Chief Policy Officer at The Digital Chamber, also noted that blockchain technology could significantly improve veterans' lives by ensuring they receive their benefits and services in a transparent and secure manner. Our full press release can be found here.

Our Office Hosted Tuesday's Children

On Thursday, August 1st, our office had the privilege of hosting a very special group: Tuesday's Children. This remarkable organization provides healing and community for families who have been changed by terrorism, military conflict, or mass violence. Tuesday's Children offers a wide range of youth mentoring programs, adult and family services, and community outreach initiatives. We were privileged to welcome these inspiring individuals to Capitol Hill and provide them with a tour of the Capitol building. Our team took them through our office and shared insights into the inner workings of Congress. We discussed the legislative process, the roles of legislative and communications teams, and how we work to serve our constituents in the Lowcountry.

The most meaningful part of their visit was undoubtedly the opportunity to hear their personal stories. Hosting Tuesday's Children was a humbling experience that we won't soon forget.

Task Force to Investigate the Assassination Attempt on Donald J. Trump

Also this week, the house established a bipartisan task force to investigate the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, which resulted in the death of an innocent victim. This comes after the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability heard testimony from Kimberly Cheatle, former director of the USSS. You can watch our line of rapid fire questions here. The task force consists of seven Republicans and six Democrats, chosen by House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. This taskforce will ensure that the investigation is comprehensive and gets answers for the victims and the American people.
