Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell just ATTACKED efforts to provide federal relief to state and local governments that have been strained by the coronavirus pandemic, with Republican Senate staff members later circulating a press release with a headline stating the need to “Stop Blue State Bailouts.”1
This latest blatantly partisan display underscores the urgency of ensuring that we flip the Senate this November – and it’s why we need your support.
While state and local governments grapple with this unprecedented health crisis, McConnell’s inhumane threat jeopardizes their financial futures and hopes of an economic recovery following the pandemic.
And without federal relief, states may be forced to make deep cuts in order to offset costs incurred by the pandemic.
The strategy of denying aid to states also seems designed to force states to consider reopening businesses and ending stay-at-home orders way earlier than health experts advise, just to be able to start collecting revenue again. This is what the greedy, short-sighted corporate special interests funding the GOP want – they want their profits boosted by reopening the economy immediately even it means more sickness, death, and long-term suffering among the American people.
States should not have to make these choices but may be forced to if McConnell gets his way.
Vulnerable Senate Republicans facing reelection this fall are sure to support McConnell in denying state and local governments federal relief to help them win reelection. Such extreme acts that jeopardize the potential wellbeing of millions of people across the country are why we need to keep up the pressure and remain focused on flipping these seats in November, but we need your help now in order to do it.
Congress can’t drag its feet in providing relief to state and local governments while Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans begin squabbling over whether and how much relief to provide. Thankfully House Democrats are taking the lead in developing the next relief proposal and they’re including state and local aid as a key component of the bill.
While Senate Republicans have already proven they are undeserving to serve in the majority, this latest stunt demonstrates they can’t be trusted to lead in a crisis either.
Let’s send them packing in November>>
