John, so the Supreme Court is a disaster. 😡
Our current Supreme Court is an unpredictable, angry hornet’s nest when it comes to gun safety, human rights, accountability, and honestly any kind of actual justice. They granted the U.S. President the right to commit crimes, made homelessness illegal, and torched gun safety laws.
Last year the arch-conservative Supreme Court in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen struck down a law in New York that limited concealed carry. They said it was unconstitutional because there was no parallel law in place in the 1700s.
We fought hard against it and filed an amicus brief. But we lost, and the decision the Supreme Court made set a precedent for U.S. v. Rahimi by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which would have granted domestic abusers the right to carry firearms.
We filed a brief in that case too, and thankfully, we won. Because of your support and our legal work, convicted domestic abusers still can’t carry firearms.
But Bruen still stands and could threaten dozens of other gun laws. In fact, just this year, the Supreme Court ALSO upheld the Fifth Circuit’s misguided and deadly decision in Garland v. Cargill, overturning a Trump-era ban on bump stocks. The kind that the Route 91 Harvest music festival shooter used to shoot 1,000 rounds in ten minutes, killing 60 people and injuring 500.
We can’t let this be our reality, and we cannot trust a Supreme Court that’s more interested in partisanship than the rule of law. If we do, they’ll set us back hundreds of years. We can’t let that happen.
We need candidates who will pass common-sense gun laws, codify safety for all demographics, and hold the Supreme Court to higher standards — and to do that we need the resources to elect candidates that will deliver on those promises.
