Today marks 89 years since President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, guaranteeing seniors and others can live with dignity. This program protects our seniors, veterans, and children — and ensures beneficiaries can pay rent, buy groceries, and fill their prescriptions. | In California’s 39th Congressional District, 102,715 constituents receive Social Security benefits every year — and across our country, 10,000 Americans become eligible for it every day. Despite how many people rely on this program, Congress has not acted to enhance benefits in more than 50 years. That’s why I am consistently working with Democrats in Congress to ensure these benefits keep up with rising costs, so our nation’s seniors can meet their everyday needs. | Last year, I helped to introduce the Social Security 2100 Act with nearly 200 of my Democratic colleagues to protect this critical program and to build upon it. The Social Security 2100 Act would enhance benefits, improve cost-of-living adjustments and ensure the wealthy pay their fair share just like everyone else. Furthermore, this legislation would repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) that currently penalize many public servants. State and local government employees, such as teachers, police officers, and firefighters are being unfairly harmed by these rules. For decades, Social Security has continued to be a reliable source of income for millions of Americans. Hard-working Americans pay into Social Security with each and every paycheck, and it is imperative to provide an across-the-board benefit increase for the first time in more than 50 years. It is time for these retirees to be treated fairly by Social Security – Congress must pass the Social Security 2100 Act. I will keep fighting in Washington to ensure this program serves our nation for decades to come. | Sign up for my newsletter to get updates on this issue and others! | Washington DC 2078 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 p 202.225.2305 f 202.225.7018 | Riverside County 3403 10th Street, Suite 610 Riverside, CA 92501 p 951.222.0203 f 951.222.0217 | |
