John,
War profiteering in Congress has gone on long enough. It's time to end it.
Right now, some lawmakers are voting on wars while owning stock in weapons companies. This is a massive conflict of interest that puts profits over people's lives.
In fact, 19 senators owned between $3.4 million and $5.8 million worth of stock in top defense contractors and 25 members of Congress sitting on national security committees have simultaneously purchased stock in defense companies.
The bipartisan ETHICS Act would ban Congressional stock trading and shut down this corrupt practice. It would require lawmakers and their immediate family members to put their stocks in a blind trust or divest entirely.
But powerful interests, including some members of Congress, want to keep the status quo.
We need your voice to push this crucial bill over the finish line. Tell your Senators to pass the ETHICS Act and stop Congressional war profiteering!
Here's why the ETHICS Act is so important:
It bans members of Congress from trading individual stocks, period.
It stops lawmakers from profiting off insider information about wars and defense contracts.
It helps restore public trust by removing this blatant conflict of interest.
It closes loopholes that have allowed some members to skirt existing ethics rules.
With the Pentagon budget ballooning to $800 billion, we can't afford to have our representatives thinking about their stock portfolios when making decisions about war and peace. This inflated budget directly benefits defense contractors, some of which are partially owned by the very lawmakers voting on these budgets.
Democracy for America has been fighting to end Congressional stock trading for years. Now we have a real chance to win, but only if we speak up loudly. The ETHICS Act has support from both Democrats and Republicans, showing that this issue transcends party lines.
Add your name now: Tell the Senate to pass the ETHICS Act and stop war profiteering in Congress!
Together, we can end this corrupt practice and build a democracy that truly serves the people, not defense contractors or weapons manufacturers.
