John,
Nearly every day this month so far, the Israeli military has used U.S. bombs to kill hundreds of displaced Palestinians while they shelter at schools in Gaza. After one massacre that killed more than 100 people during morning prayers, family members could not find a single intact body of their loved ones. Parents described seeing their children in pieces.
Despite claiming support for a ceasefire, the Biden administration just sent more U.S. bombs, billions more in military aid, and even U.S. troops to Israel.
The Democratic party cannot claim to stand for democracy and freedom while supporting a government that’s committing apartheid and genocide. At next week’s Democratic National Convention, Democratic leaders must take a clear stand against the genocide of Palestinians.
While our neighbors are struggling to put food on the table, fighting to keep a roof over their heads, and rationing their medication, Congress continues to spend nearly a trillion dollars every year on the military budget -- while sending billions of U.S. taxpayers directly to other countries’ militaries.
Democratic party delegates and leaders will adopt an official party platform next week, which should call for investing in working families and prioritizing diplomacy and peace over the military industrial complex.
Sign on to tell Democratic party leaders and delegates: At next week’s Democratic National Convention, adopt a party platform that reflects the priorities of our Democratic base -- including an arms embargo to stop the Israeli government’s war crimes.
The people who make up our Democratic base have been clear: They want to see a permanent ceasefire, an end to the funding of genocide in Gaza, and an arms embargo to stop the Israeli government’s war crimes. They want to see fair and humane immigration policies, not ones that vilify immigrants. They want to see a clear path to ending fossil fuel subsidies that continue to poison our air and water. They want affordable healthcare, housing, and education. They want us to fight against corporate greed, strengthen unions, and lift families out of the cycle of poverty.
In order to live up to our values as the party of the people and the working class, Democrats must divest from endless war and death -- and instead invest in life and in what our constituents need to thrive.
Next week’s national convention is a chance for Democratic party leaders to demonstrate their alignment with Democratic voters. If they want to defeat Trump and prevent Project 2025, Democratic candidates and leaders must listen to our Democratic base.
Please sign if you agree: Democratic party leaders and delegates should adopt a party platform that reflects the priorities of our Democratic base -- including an arms embargo to stop the Israeli government’s war crimes.
Thank you for continuing to demand a world that values all life.
In solidarity,
Rashida
