[ [link removed] ]SIGN: Let Jordan Chiles keep her bronze medal!
Dear MoveOn member,
Jordan Chiles is an exceptional athlete and part of the gold medal-winning
American women's gymnastics team. In the individual floor exercise
competition, she earned the bronze medal, a recognition of her remarkable
display of athleticism and excellence. She had that medal unjustly
stripped from her, an unfair decision that the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic
Committee is now fighting.
[ [link removed] ]Chiles earned the bronze medal, and she deserves to keep it. Will you

Jordan Chiles performed exceptionally in this year's women's gymnastics
competition—and after she was awarded a bronze medal, confusion and
bureaucracy led to her being stripped of the honor she deserves.
The International Olympic Committee must right this injustice, recognize
her for her gymnastic excellence, and award her bronze.

Last week, the International Olympic Committee revoked Chiles' medal—a
move that has, in the past, been reserved largely for athletes found
guilty of cheating or using performance-enhancing drugs.^1 This is not the
case for Chiles—whose only fault was the bureaucratic confusion and
failures of the various judicial bodies governing her sport.
After Chiles' competition, her coach appealed the score—and the judges,
upon reconsideration, adjusted her score, awarding her bronze. However,
because a later claim contended that Chiles' coach was four seconds late
in lodging the appeal, a panel then stripped her of this medal.^2 USA
Gymnastics says they have video evidence that the appeal was made under
the minute mark, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) refused to
review it.^3 This is absurd and outrageous—and an insult to all the
athletes who have been cast into limbo.
[ [link removed] ]There is no confusion about Chiles' exceptional talent or the score she
received—she earned the bronze medal. The IOC must reverse its mistaken
decision now.
Once the appeal was accepted, it should not have been revoked. There are
questions of conflict of interest around the judge who ruled against
Chiles.^4 And, overall, this is against the spirit of the Olympics. The
Romanian team—which was awarded the bronze after it was taken from
Chiles—suggested three athletes should each receive a medal, a solution
which has precedent.^5,6
[ [link removed] ]This isn't about taking an honor away from any other athlete. Whether
two or three athletes are awarded bronze, or just Chiles—as the judges had
ruled—Jordan Chiles earned that medal. And the Olympic Committee must make
this right. Click here to add your name to the petition.
Thanks for all you do.
