When Mallaiah stepped onto a fishing boat for the first time when he was 8 years old, he had no idea he was about to become enslaved like his entire village of Amaragiri had been for years before him.

Families of Amaragiri had been exploited in the fishing industry for decades. Their ancestors had been pushed aside when modern industry entered their region. Without knowing how to earn a living, entire generations fell prey to wealthy businessmen who promised to teach them to fish for themselves — but instead trapped them in debt bondage.

Thanks to the support of so many, IJM and partners learned of the plight of the families of Amaragiri and supported the local government in a rescue at that village that finally freed Mallaiah and so many others.

“We were in bondage for almost 30 years,” Mallaiah said about his village, which has slowly become self-sufficient since being freed — thanks largely to Mallaiah himself.

After being rescued, IJM saw leadership potential in Mallaiah and helped build his confidence. Today, he is Deputy Panchayat President of the village, and has helped usher in support from the local government to build the community and help its families thrive.

Mallaiah has also become a proud member of IJM’s Global Survivor Network leadership council. “I want more people like me to be rescued. I want them to experience the freedom I experience now so that they too can become leaders in their community.”
