** Football clubs urged to fly less
------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Supporter

Domestic flights are simply bad news for the planet, especially when the same journey could be undertaken by train or coach. In recent years, we've started to see more and more football clubs flying to domestic games. Last year, a BBC study found that Premier League clubs flew to eight out of ten of their domestic matches. The average journey time was 42 minutes, with the shortest flight just 27 minutes!

We think that's unacceptable.

To tackle these unnecessary flights, we've launched a new campaign on social media. Throughout the football season we'll be awarding the 'Black Boot' trophy for outstanding contributions to football’s carbon footprint. This is one football award no club will want to get their hands on!

In partnership with Fossil Free Football ([link removed]) and creative agency Leith, we'll be calling out the worst offenders with ‘Player of the Season’, ‘Man of the Match’, and ‘Team of the Month’ awards up for grabs.

Here's where we need your help! If you're on X, please follow @BlackBootTrophy ([link removed]) and every time you spot a player or club posting about flying to a match please repost tagging us and @BlackBootTrophy ([link removed]) .

Changing the way we travel is one of the most effective things we can do the reduce carbon emissions. Football clubs should be leading the way and playing a bigger role in our fight against climate change.

** New Chair of Trustees
------------------------------------------------------------

We're very pleased to announce that Shamit Gaiger OBE has been appointed as our new Chair of Trustees. Shamit is taking over from John Stewart who is retiring as Chair after six years in the post. Shamit has an extensive career in rail and was appointed Managing Director of West Coast Partnership Development in 2022. With over 20 years of experience in developing national and sectoral policies and strategies for the UK, Shamit is a strong supporter of sustainable transport and has been on Campaign for Better Transport’s board of trustees since 2019.

** "I am delighted to have been appointed Chair of Trustees at this pivotal time for the transport sector. Campaign for Better Transport is at the forefront of the drive to make transport more sustainable and reduce its negative effects, to create a transport network that delivers a fairer society. I am very much looking forward to working with the team during this exciting time."
Shamit Gaiger OBE, Campaign for Better Transport's new Chair of Trustees

Until next time,

Alice
