Dear Friend,
When former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters undermined the integrity of our elections and broke the law, our department joined with the District Attorney for the 21st Judicial District, Dan Rubenstein, to prosecute her and hold her accountable.
On Monday, a jury found Tina Peters guilty of exposing election equipment and allowing unauthorized access to voting machines. The jury rightly found that Peters must be held accountable for jeopardizing the security of our elections.
This verdict stands as a warning to other lawbreakers that our election security is sacred, and those who seek to tamper with our voting processes will face the full weight of the law and be held accountable for their actions.
Amid rising misinformation, polarization, and demonization, this verdict serves as a clear example of our justice system holding lawbreakers accountable. The same applies to those who assaulted law enforcement officers and tried to undermine the peaceful transition of power on January 6th. We must continue to combat dangerous conspiracy theories and disinformation that threaten our Nation and the rule of law.
I’m proud of our close work with DA Rubinstein, a Republican, to ensure the law was enforced and the case was prosecuted with integrity, protecting our elections. And I’m grateful for the Mesa County residents who served as jurors, giving their commitment, thoughtfulness, and time in fulfilling this important civic duty. It’s critical that we not allow election integrity to be a partisan issue; I am proud to work alongside DA Rubinstein on this case.
Thank you for being on our team to defend our democracy and election integrity.
Phil
