The NY Times reports "there are similarities between Ms. Harper, 36, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York" as she campaigns against economic segregation and for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, a Jobs Guarantee, and universal child care.
In a Zoom video call Morgan did with PCCC members recently, Morgan shared how her campaign had to be grassroots to the core to compete against entrenched incumbent Joyce Beatty, who has taken over $2 million from corporate PACs: "If we're going to change the political landscape of Central Ohio and bring progressive values here, then we have to organize our entire community."
Morgan's team did just that, knocking on tens of thousands of doors before the coronavirus forced them to shift their focus to phone calls. Then, the coronavirus pushed back the election and switched to all vote-by-mail! Now, what's extremely important is reminding people who got mail-in ballots that they must send them and get them postmarked TODAY.
Morgan also shared on the Zoom call: "PCCC's been such a great support for our campaign all along the way. And especially in this extra-innings portion that we've gotten!"
We've raised over $30,000 for her campaign through thousands of donations, and PCCC members volunteered from across Ohio and the nation.
If there's one thing we know about congressional elections with a strong grassroots contender, it's that they often come down to the slimmest of margins. Getting even just one additional vote can make the difference. This is especially true this year, with turnout models upended due to the pandemic.

Morgan Harper (OH-03) was a senior advisor for Elizabeth Warren's Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. She is now running for Congress on April 28 against incumbent Joyce Beatty, a corporate Democrat who has taken over $2 million in corporate PAC money, helped Republicans disenfranchise Black voters through gerrymandering, and actively calls Medicare for All and a Green New Deal a "pipe dream."
Morgan was born and raised in the district. She lived in a foster home before being adopted by her mother, an immigrant from Trinidad. She earned a law degree at Stanford and fought predatory lenders at the CFPB. Morgan out-fundraised her incumbent opponent for much of last year and was ready for a March 17 election. Because of the pandemic, her primary was moved to April 28. Her opponent has taken advantage of that extra month, re-filling her coffers with corporate money that she is now using on the airwaves. Morgan has TV, digital, and radio ads -- but needs more money to increase their volume for voters making up their mind in the final days. She is also running an aggressive voter contact program by phone, which costs money.
