Recently, the Biden administration announced a plan to provide temporary relief
for some immigrants who are married to U.S. citizens.
This plan represents the kind of action we want and need from our elected
leaders. This much-needed relief could keep hundreds of thousands of families together
and recognizes that so many immigrants are deeply rooted community members who
make America stronger.
This plan, set to go into effect August 19, 2024, will allow noncitizen spouses
of U.S. citizens who have been here for more than ten years to pursue lawful
permanent resident status.
About half a million spouses of U.S. citizens and around 50,000 noncitizen youth
under 21 could be eligible, allowing families to remain united and fully
participate in their communities without fear of deportation.
These new actions build on our collective commitment to a fair and humane
immigration system, reflecting the values that we tirelessly advocate for.
Even as we celebrate this important moment, we cannot lose sight of the millions
of immigrants across the country who are still waiting for a permanent
legislative solution. It’s well past time for Congress to get the job done and establish a 21st
century immigration system. That’s why staying united in advocacy efforts and
support is crucial. Please support our work with a donation when you can.
