### **Families Are Moving Out of Big Cities**
In a revealing trend that underscores the failures of urban progressive policies, American families with young children are increasingly abandoning major cities. This exodus, highlighted in recent reports by The Atlantic and analysis by a Manhattan Institute scholar, suggests that the very policies championed by progressives may be driving families away.
The Atlantic's Derek Thompson recently critiqued JD Vance's pronatalist views but conceded that progressives face a significant "family problem." This issue stems less from personal choices about childbearing and more from the family-unfriendly policies prevalent in Democrat-controlled urban areas.
According to Connor O’Brien of the Economic Innovation Group, the population of children under five is dwindling at twice the rate in large urban counties compared to other regions. This stark decline is evident in major cities like New York and Los Angeles, where the number of young children has plummeted by nearly 20 percent in just three years.
"These places ought to be advertisements for what the modern progressive movement can achieve without meddlesome conservatism getting in the way, at the local or state level," The Atlantic pointed out in its analysis. The publication further challenged progressive leaders with a poignant critique: "If progressives want to sell their cause to the masses, they should be able to say: Elect us, and we’ll make America more like Oakland. Or Brooklyn. Or suburban Detroit. If they can’t make that argument, that’s a problem."
The decline in young populations in these cities is not merely a result of the COVID-19 pandemic or broader national trends of falling birth rates. Cities in Republican-led states have been more successful in building housing and controlling child-care costs, suggesting that policy failures in Democrat-led cities are contributing to the family exodus.
