The Good Fight

What to Know: TPPF General Counsel Robert Henneke argued before the Texas Supreme Court on behalf of a father who has been forced to share custody of his young daughter with an unrelated man. The hearing was conducted via Zoom.

The TPPF Take: Parental rights must be paramount in legal proceedings.

“No one disputing this father’s fitness in this case, and should have full rights to make decisions he believes are best for his daughter and family,” says Henneke. “The lower court’s ruling that a virtual stranger to a child somehow has superior rights than the child’s parent is not only absurd, it’s unconstitutional.”

Healthy Recovery

What to Know: Though the federal government and insurance companies say they’ll cover the costs of COVID-19 testing and treatment, many patients could receive a surprise medical bill, experts say.

The TPPF Take: The Texas Public Policy Foundation has a “Healthy Recovery” legislative agenda to increase patient access and lower costs for all Texans.

“Texans are largely frustrated by the way we pay for and deliver health care services,” says TPPF’s David Balat. “Costs are skyrocketing, people are paying tens of thousands of dollars before coverage kicks in, insurance companies are failing patients, and too many communities are seeing their medical providers close up shop. Right on Healthcare has a strong plan to address these issues, put patients back in charge, and lower costs for services.”

Higher Education?

What to Know: Harvard Magazine has a new piece claiming that homeschooling is dangerous—and could even undermine the power of the state.

The TPPF Take: The Harvard professor quoted in this piece advocates a “presumptive ban” on parents educating their own children.

“This professor objects to the ‘authoritarian control’ of parents over their children, and says instead, government should have that power,” says TPPF’s Tom Lindsay. “It’s not parents teaching their children that I consider especially ‘dangerous.’ What I find truly dangerous is the anti-family ideology promulgated here.”
