Ranked: The Largest Sovereign Debt Defaults in Modern History

Given the financial burden of war, the country suspended interest
payments on international debt over the last two years, which was set
to expire on August 1, 2024. Without this new debt restructuring, this
default would have ranked among the 10 largest in recent history. The
last time Ukraine defaulted on its debt was in 2015, after Russia’s
invasion of Crimea.

The country defaulted again just nine months later, making it the
fourth-largest ever. Leading up to the crash, Greece ran significant
deficits despite being one of the fastest-growing countries in Europe.
Furthermore, in 2009, the newly elected prime minister revealed that
the country was $410 billion in debt—substantially more than
previous estimates.

For a decade, the promised era of robo-flipped burgers and automated
baristas has always been just around the corner. But automation in
restaurants, at least in the United States, remains a novelty. That is
not because the robots and A.I. assistants can’t hack it. By and
large, the technology is there, and in some cases has been for years.

Tardigrades are survivors. For more than 500 million years, the
microscopic “water bears” have spread all over the planet and
endured some of the harshest conditions Earth has to offer. Now a new
analysis of ancient tardigrades in a piece of Cretaceous amber has not
only clarified the timeline of tardigrade evolution, but hints how the
tiny animals have been able to survive disasters that drove other
forms of life to extinction.

Would you fly to Turkey for a hair transplant or trek to a natural

worlds, ailing people made pilgrimages to special sanctuaries called
asklepieia dedicated to the physician-demigod Asklepios (or

to make their shareholders richer. Doing good meant doing well. More
precisely, it meant raising their firm’s share price. Such a narrow
measure of success, it was argued, would keep managers focused and
honest.
