Friends,

Last week, ASPIRE reached out to ask about your personal experience with COVID-19 and sheltering in place. I want to thank you for being brave enough to respond -- your stories were sometimes heartbreaking, but also filled with optimism.

Over 80% of respondents said they’d been affected by COVID-19. Our hearts go out to the senior living facility nurse who wrote to say they’d had to use all their vacation time to safely isolate when they were running a fever but couldn’t get tested. We’re also feeling for the many of you who are retired but have seen the part-time work you’d enjoyed, either as a hobby or a livelihood, cut back or cut out of your life.

But we were thrilled to read about how so many of you are triumphing. How you’re going for walks, writing and calling friends and relatives, and savoring the small things -- one of our readers said they are leaning into opportunities to laugh or admire the first flowers and returning birds of spring.

As I continue to practice the guidelines I know work to keep us all safe -- handwashing thoroughly and regularly for at least 20 seconds, social distancing, being kind in times of stress -- I’ll also be thinking of the reader who wrote us to say she’s doing all of those things and also that she’ll be 93 in June. Happy early birthday, and thanks for the advice on enjoying sunny days and Zooming regularly with friends.

We wanted to reach out to learn more about what you’re going through, to give you some emotional comfort, and to get some from you. You delivered. Now let’s keep our spirits high and keep our eyes on the bright horizon.

Thank you,
Grace
